Re: Songs that Make You Cry

Never to the point of shedding a tear, but a track like Mercury Rev's Frittering can really move me; That sense of insignificance of self but also of beauty in a cosmic sense of the word...

Or Milemarker's Lost the thoughts but kept the skin (that crescendo, pure sadness and desperation).

Very different emotions, both incredibly moving.

And yeah, those classic folk singers could deliver incredibly moving performances. Like Helplessly hoping and shit.

- 'Chiquitita' by ABBA. 'Fernando' is also sad, but it doesn't push me to tears.

- 'My Love' by Petula Clark. This never used to make me cry - it's an exuberant song about being in love - but now there's two lines in this song that get me crying.
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

A Night Like This by The Cure once meant a whole lot to me and a certain young lady. For years after we broke up I couldn't listen to it unless I wanted to end up a blubbering mess. I kind of forced myself to get over it since The Head On The Door is my favorite Cure LP and having to pick up and move the needle every time became tedious and silly. I'm OK with it now but I still get a little bittersweet pang every once in a while ...

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
Can't stand here like this anymore
For always and ever is always for you
I want it to be perfect like before
Oh ho ho, I want to change it all
Oh ho ho, I want to change
