Interesting question here about how you judge a band’s career… is it the highs or the lows? In my head it’s the highs. Slayer put out a perfect album, maybe three in a row. And then 30 years of, sure, and, yeah that’s pretty good…

Absolutely. If you had to average and mean a bands material, there would be very few bands worth talking about at all. Rock and Roll is lightning in a bottle anyways.

As for them putting out "weak" material for the past 30 years, who cares? Since I happen to really like Divine Intervention, that means they put out 6 albums *and* the GOAT metal EP (=Haunting the chapel) that range from "very good" to "amazing"; that's more than 99.9% of all bands could ever do...If that's not enough for a NC, I don't know what is... besides, the reason their later material is so underwhelming IMO is because mosT songs/riffs/sections sound like weaker versions of earlier stuff (see also AC/DC from Fly on the wall and inwards though I dug Stiff upper lip for some reason). Had their earlier stuff been weaker, they would have appeared more consistent. Judging a band by its consistency us actually frequently of benefit to more "mediocre" bands

I thought World Painted Blood was pretty good. Haven't bothered with anything after that though.

Any fans of Christ Illusion? Someone turned me on to that one since it had Lombardo back on the kit. It's not bad.

Not crap. Saw them in 1990 with Nuclear assault supporting, I used to sneer at metal in those days but that was a total blast. Obviously the first 2 or 3 albums are the best, but most bands tail off with later releases, no?

Contributing factor. Jeff was an alcoholic and died of liver disease.

Show No Mercy is my favorite Slayer record these days. And Kerry King's original Warlock with the Kahler was his coolest guitar.

You might enjoy Kerry King's solo album. It sounds like recent Slayer, but is better than Repentless.

Along that same line...

In addition to the tune being evergreen, it did hit me must how much the "Sexorcisto..." era of White Zombie was lifting from that sort of Slayer tune.

It was right up there with that stretch where Metallica were just coping mid-period COC.
