I have bought 2 on ebay for for around $120-130 for the body and cardioid caps and pads. I've had one of mine since 1997 and its still kicking. I've told people that if they only could have one mic an Oktava MK012 isn't a bad choice. I love them on toms. I've used 137's and they are good. Sound more similar to a SM81 to my ears and there is nothing wrong with that. Never used a 4051. SM81's are coo too. between my Oktavas and 81's I've never wanted for more SDCs.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Mon Apr 08, 2024 9:45 am Thanks, I’ll add Oktavas to my search feelers. Maybe I can find one for cheap before I commit to a pair.
I feel like any two single KSM137 or AT4051 mics would probably match well enough for my purposes, but not sure about these.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
1872KSM137 is the same as the KSM141 in cardioid mode. I love them for overheads. We ab’ed them with a pair of MK-012 and preferred the Shure. The highs are less harsh. The 012s are pretty good though. I probably wouldn’t know the difference if it wasn’t side by side.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 4:10 pm Any opinions on a pair of Audio Technica 4051 vs Shure KSM137? Need a utility pair, maybe more for acoustic stuff than anything else, but still need some all arounders. Would probably prefer the KSM141 for omni , but those are too expensive right now.
Also, if a Beyer M88 is too boomy on my voice - what are you doing while tracking? Move it back? HPF? Grab another mic?
I was holding it for scratch vocals and the proximity effect was a little too happening, though I was still careful not to eat the mic. My inclination would be to move it further back, but at that point, wouldn’t a condenser be a better option? There’s no reason I couldn’t put it on a stand and back away a bit, I’m just sort of doing a gut check here.

1873I like the Audio Technica 4051 more. Just felt like they didn't color the sound as much. They sounds good on acoustic guitars in my opinion if you mic it around the twelth fret.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Sat Apr 06, 2024 4:10 pm Any opinions on a pair of Audio Technica 4051 vs Shure KSM137? 1874Does anyone make recreations of the single coils on 60s Japanese guitars that aren't gold foils?
Or are contemporary cheap single coils close enough for most tastes?

1875What is the easiest way to neaten up this scratchplate? When I swapped the stock p/ups out of this Gretsch, the new ones had bigger mounting rings, and I did a messy job of trimming the recesses in the scratchplate to accomodate them.

What is an easy (as in with fairly standard DIY tools, rather than fully kitted-out work bench) of tidying it up, with straight lines and proper corners?
Apologies for the dustiness of the guitar. Spring sunlight is merciless!

1876I'd use a wide, fine-tooth file to clean that up. Go slowly, check often.

1877Agree, and barring that perhaps sandpaper adhered to a flat block. Something allows to tool to create the straight edge your'e looking for.Nate Dort wrote: Wed Apr 17, 2024 6:34 am I'd use a wide, fine-tooth file to clean that up. Go slowly, check often.

1878I'm sure that would be well received! I'm curious what logic is required to separate the wheedle dee from the yak yak.
