When should you go to the police?

I got jumped on North Avenue trying to get to a MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) station when I first moved here. I was walking down the street, when this white dude passed me and then immediately turned around and started following me. I was about three or four more blocks from the station when finally I turned around and said "Why the fuck are you following me?" He answered me with a stiff fist in the jaw. This black dude came out of nowhere and started kicking me while the white dude tried to grab my watch and my wallet. I fought them off enough to get back up to my feet, when two people came running to my defense. The perps ran, and the cops were called. I was all kinds of fucked up. Nothing broken, but I sprained my wrist when I was trying to shield my face and I got all bloodied and dirtied. I'll never forget what the cops said to me:

"You need medical attention?"
"No, I'm okay."
"So it was three black guys?"
"No."
"We were told it was three black goons."
"No, it was a white guy and a black guy."
"Oh...you sure they weren't all black guys?"

This was kind of the icing on the bitter cake that had been baking ever since I discovered in my early teens that all cops are bastards. I didn't file a report or anything, I just kind of said "let it be." Serves me right for mouthing off instead of just walking the rest of the way to the station without getting all uppity. Been living here a couple of years now and have frequented the MARTA...seen a lot of dumb shit but never had any more problems.

haha, i wouldn't mess with a biker.

i think these kids definately needed some kind of confrontation/resistance.. but i don't think i could have brought myself to spark the kid back. it just wouldn't have seemed right.

but then on the other hand, i'm sure all five of them could have dealt with me pretty easily, so maybe i shouldn't have been so bothered about it.

Honrstly HCT, if I were you and I thought I could have identified them, I would have got the cops (whom I HATE HATE HATE), had the kids nabbed, and then dropped the charges. Lets them know the shit will not be tolerated but that you aren't a spiteful bastard either. This shit will make an impression on somebody if they're even the slightest bit reachable. They will assume you're going to press the charges, then shocked and confused when you let them off the hook. They'll think twice about fucking with you next time.

Of course if they are released and go on to murder somebody's Gran, you'll feel like shit. Such is life!

The cops in this town are pretty cool, so I'd have no issue with calling them. People generally like things to be pretty peaceful around here and trust the police with their charge.

I wouldn't bother in some towns, but here I think they'd really bust ass to help.
So, depends on if you think it would help, based on what you know about your local police.

recently i was walking to a show i was playing around 41st and market, carrying a guitar and video camera bag, while on my cell phone (ok not a smart combination) from 41st and girard (near parkside avenue, of schooly d "people say psk what does it mean? parkside killers" infamy) and a gang of kids who were probably around age 12 started saying stuff -- the one saying "i'll fuck your shit up, take all your shit!" and i could've just not said anything but banking on the idea that they want to get off on the notion that white me is so scared, i just said "give me a break, kid" and kept walking, continuing my phone conversation and ignoring the "what'd you say? say it again"

nothing happened, which is good because 12 years old or not, if those ten kids attacked me at once they probably could "fuck my shit up and take all my shit".

Sorry to hear that. There was a nasty attack at the Candler Park station a few years ago. It was a one-on-one situation where I believe the victim lost an eye. It was at the bus station on the other side from the train stop.
