And since public schools are not funded by the federal government, President Paul will have no influence over how states and local communities educate. Other than the last 8% of their costs, public schools are not in the federal budget.

From ed.gov:
States and localities are the primary sources of K-12 education funding and always have been. In the 2004-05 school year, 83 cents out of every dollar spent on education is estimated to come from the state and local levels (45.6 percent from state funds and 37.1 percent from local governments). The federal government's share is 8.3 percent.

Worrying about President Paul turning your kid's school over to Wal*Mart is about as good a worry as worrying that Paul will paint every private automobile orange.

also:
There are no unfunded federal education "mandates." Every federal education law is conditioned on a state or other grantee's decision to accept federal program funds.

The Feds are not the boss of schools.

Bob (Rick, whatever)

I do only tease you lightly. I think I'm generally pretty nice to you considering how rude you are to some people round here.

I do still (sometimes, although less often) read your posts, and I do occasionally find that you have interesting things to say. The post you've linked in your signature, however (which you'll probably change in a few hours), dates from a year and a half ago, when you seemed much more reasonable and calm. For example, back then I'm pretty sure you didn't go in for the Shouting Thing or the insults, etc.

I'm not the first person to have told you this, but you're behaviour of late seems to me have become increasingly irrational, and well, ranty, to coin another new adjective. I have read quite a few of your many, many posts on Ron Paul, and even responded to one or two in a thoughtful manner, but as I just can't see the possibility of any real debate with you, i.e. where two people are actually listening to each other's responses, I pretty much avoid entering in to discussion with you, especially as you quickly become abusive and boorish towards those who disagree with you. I know you'll throw back something about the left-right illusion and my being caught in the media machine or some such whatnot, but I hold that Ron Paul is a dick. I fundamentally disagree with contemporary American Libertarianism, and moreover (and more significantly) with the man's manifesto/policies. If you wish to argue to the contrary without shouting or calling me stupid then I'd be happy to enter in to a debate, although it would very much be limited by the fact that we're on the internet, and I'm a busy man with things to do.

For the mean time, I'll continue to occasionally tease you and laugh at you because you have become something of a parody of your former self. Feel free to take the piss out of me in return - it's only harmless fun, after all. But maybe you don't get that bit? I'm not sure.

Oh, and I'm still pretty sure that Cyndi Lauper is a woman.

And so you decide to locate me, so you can announce to the room, "I can't debate with Bob."

When you're not in a thread where I am, I have no idea where you are on this forum, or if you are on this forum. You seem to have some need to appear in threads where I am writing, so you can tell me that you're not reading me.

It's a little weird on your part. We've got enough weirdos following me around already, as you can see.

You have my invitation to attack any of his positions individually. Calling him a 'dick' doesn't give me anything to work with.

Here-

Ron Paul is for:

ending the Federal Reserve

ending fiat currency

changing our tax laws

ending unfair trade agreements

ending foreign military interventions

That's a lot of material. It's up to you.

Erm, no, I "announced" that I do sometimes read you, Bob.

But anyhows, I'm not some weirdo following you around. And in fact, in my last post, I did mean to say that yeah, you do have some kind of weird people obsessively following you around - God knows why they don't just give it a rest.

My above post was just to clarify my attitude to you, as when you put one of my posts from 18 months ago in your signature in juxtaposition to something I'd said today, I took it that you were confused as to what I was trying to say, or flip-floppy in my attitude towards you, or whatever. Fuck knows. But anyhow, it was simply for clarification. I'm more than happy to leave it at that - the last thing I need is to get in to some argument with you, as I don't have the time and past experience wouldn't give me hope of a potential resolution.

By the way - and I don't mean this to be a remark pointed solely in your direction - I find this whole digging up people's posts from a long time ago thing that's going on round here a bit weird. I mean, people are allowed to change their minds, aren't they? And maybe be a bit confused or even hypocritical at times? It's pretty hard to have a totally synthetic world view that encompasses a coherent viewpoint on everything. I for one haven't. I mean, a decade ago, had I even have known what the internet was, I'd probably have gone on a message board and proclaimed Radiohead to be the greatest band who ever existed. If I say today that actually, most of their recorded output annoys me, does that make me a hypocrite?

But enough with this. I'll leave you be Bob.

Well, ok, saying he's a dick doesn't give you a lot to work with. But if you look over the first few pages you'll see why I think he's a dick. Put simply, I believe the US needs a bigger, more responsible government and to pay more taxes. You need a free health system, for example. In the first few pages of this thread - before things got nasty - I made that clear. I believe that the US needs government more akin to that found in Western Europe (as previously stated, there's no western European government I'd lend unqualified support to, but I think it would be a step i nthe right direction). In fact, the only things I agree with Ron Paul on are:

ending unfair trade agreements

ending foreign military interventions

But even then, I'm not sure the way he'd go about achieving these things would be what I'd hope for.

But you disagree, which is fine. We can agree to disagree, can't we?

I hope that makes my position clear.

Well, I think you should give it a rest too, to be honest mate.
