You know the one about the minister who goes on and on about the deceased, painting him as the most devout, compassionate, humble dude to ever wear pants.....then glances down into the casket and gasps, "My God, I know this man."

When my grandfather died several years ago, a relative came up at his memorial and read a letter he had written to my grandmother just before he was going to go ashore in some South Pacific hellhole. They had been married about three years, and he had been in the Army for most of it. The letter spoke about what their lives together were going to be like, the children they would raise, how beautiful she was, etc (and never has the "etc" in a sentence felt so inadequate). It was so moving, so much a testament to how, in retrospect, one man chose to live up to the promises he made when young. I never heard him raise his voice to my grandmother, or my mom, or any of his many grandkids. He went to work for the Post Office after he came home from the war, went to church every week, played golf, always had a few quarters for the arcade or just the right advice, and I never heard anyone say anything negative about him. Ever. So those of us sitting in the pews at grandpa's funeral.....remember when they announced that Pope John Paul II had died, the millions in Vatican City broke into applause?....that's how we felt after that letter was read. The man walked it.

My best friend, since I sat him down and we watched "The Mission" and "Motorcycle Diaries," had taken the messages of these movies to heart and has since go on trips to volunteer where he has felt needed. The first trip was in 2006, helping out those who needed it in the neighborhoods of Mississippi where Katrina screwed them and reconstruction was still needed. The next trip was to Lesotho, the tiny African state surrounded by South Africa. While there, he helped teach kids basic math in a neighborhood school and also helped poor farmers. Most recently, he helped one of the better homeless organizations in downtown Cleveland. Not sure on what's up his sleeve next, but whatever it is, I know that it will help people.

My dad has traveled along most of the East coast with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell. He's got plenty of funny stories of the first few times he's been to NYC, as part of the choir. He is also in the choir that sings on the soundtrack to the film Reds.

japmn wrote:My friend, Tom, is a serial finger-banger. He has on more than four known occasions initiated a finger-banging with no previous romantic foreplay or qualifications of any kind. He once finger-banged a gal under a blanket he was sharing with her and her boyfriend on the couch. Never a word was spoken, just a finger-banging and a farewell. It was awkward for everyone else in the room because we all knew what was going down.
He just grinned.

Wait a second, so the gal's boyfriend knew what was happening and didn't say anything about it?

Disturbing.

Steve says:

And the guy who bedded several mother/daughter teams. Same guy shit his pants on national TV.

I am in awe of this man. nothing can top this. my new messiah. hope there was some load fart noises too.

excellent.

My younger brother flew his first solo in a cessna before he had ever driven a car. He is now a licenced commercial diver and dive instructor, and is an executive in a worldwide satellite communications company. sheesh.
