90s Shock-Rock-Dome: Rob Zombie vs Marilyn Manson

1
Both summoned a decadent and depraved post-punk take on the Alice Cooper playbook to great commercial effect in the 90s. But which shock-rocker do you reckon will win in a face off?

I'm somewhat torn in that I believe La Sexorcisto is practically perfect (and Astro-Creep 2000 is no slouch either), but Rob's solo stuff (sans Jay and Sean) is just junk. Manson is a blowhard across a whole album, but I am generally entertained by the singles on the first 5 albums. The stuff after Holy Wood..., however, is some real rancid product.

FIGHT!

The last time I saw NIN was sometime around '94. By then I was a pretty big fan and psyched to see him for the second time. The openers were a cheesy as fuck lesbian "techno" act called Fem2Fem and a new band TR discovered called Marilyn Manson. After steeling myself against the horrid electronic rave music of Fem2Fem I was ready to check out MM. The lights go down and out comes this dude cosplaying as Vincent Price in Witchfinder General. After rolling my eyes so far back that I could see into the past I had enough and bailed. Didn't even stay for NIN. It was that bad. All that said, over the years I have been a bit charmed by his fetishization of surgical tools and prostheses, and Mechanical Animals is kinda fun.

I don't know much from White Zombie but I do admit to dancing pretty hard in clubs to KMFDM's remixes of "Thunder Kiss '65." I hear Soul Crusher is the WZ record for the noise rock crowd but I've never spent quality time with it. I like him better as a filmmaker and find him easy on the eyes when not looking like a cyberpunk reject from Fields of the Nephilim.

So it comes down to Thunder Kiss '65 remixes vs Dope Show. Both fun. Tie-breaker is looks. Brian Warner is an ugly abusive sumunabitch whereas Robert Cummings is a friendly-looking horror fan.

Justice for Kyle Bassinga, Da'Quain Johnson, Logan Sharpe, Qaadir & Nazir Lewis, Emily Pike, Sam Nordquist, Randall Adjessom, Javion Magee, Destinii Hope, Kelaia Turner, Dexter Wade, Nakari Campbell, Sara Millerey González

Yeah, I thought he sucked shit before Evan Rachel Wood's documentary. Wimpy grid-aligned glam rock, real piss-your-parents-off stuff..

White Zombie isn't great but fun enough in small doses. Rob Zombie solo sounds like something concocted out of Idiocracy but still less embarrassing than Marylin Manson.
