Using all first takes is a sign of a practiced band, Husker Du were a machine going into Zen Arcade . Infighting leads to 10,000 takes and countless studio hours being wasted. Husker Du's internal problems are pretty well-documented, but you're defining the band by them, which is ridiculous.

The recordings are mostly fine compared to a lot of other American underground stuff. Maybe Inner Ear stuff was slightly better but it was such a different era as far as resources available and technology itself.
