Hello again guys. I recently asked a question and received a lot of helpful information. HOwever, I wanted to add to that question.. and hopefully someone can help me out again.
Basically, I'm interested in bringing my band to EA studios to do an album. I'm a huge fan of Mr albini both artistically and philosophically, so working with him would be fantastic. But, I'm a little concerned about what seems to be a sort of DIY attitude towards the bands. While I'm greatly in favor of bands sounding the way the BAND wants to sound, and not the way someone thinks they should sound... I'm curious just how far this extends. You see, I know how I want to sound... I'm just not always so good at getting that sound. For example, I'll write a song... and I'll think to myself that the song would really sound great mixed like debaser by the pixies. Or a different song would sound just perfect mixed like a Jesus and Mary Chain song. But beyond that, I'm at a loss. I mean, do I use two guitar tracks on the chorus to fill it it, and one on the lead? Do I use two on the lead? Just how to I get it to sound the way I want it to?
So... My question is, to the people at EA and to the people who have recorded here, how much input does the EA staff provide? Do you think that a novice recorder like me would benefit from working here, or would I simply drive everyone crazy by not knowing how to get the sound I want to get?
Follow up question about recording at EA...
2I would bet that a majority of bands that record in "real" studios for the first time have an equal or lesser amount of knowledge about the process than you do. That said, I'm confident that Steve or any of the other guys will be able to help you attain almost any sound you could want. Giving examples of sounds from particular songs/albums is a good way to get a point across without having to come up with esoteric adjectives to describe it.
While it seems EA attempts to leave as much decision-making to the band itself as possible, they will offer any help they can if asked- you probably won't find them pushing their opinions on you unsolicited though.
They're there to make you happy and finding the sound you want is part of that. Have no fear!
Good luck.
