Band: Poison Idea

7
The only Poison Idea record I ever heard was the Pick Your King EP. There was much mumbling among Louisvillians about Jerry "The King" Lawler not having been an option.

I remember being heartened by the fact that there was a hardcore band somewhere in America comprised of men fatter than my bandmates and I in Malignant Growth. I remember nothing about the music itself, but it did not inspire me to delve further into the Poison Idea oeuvre, and it did not inspire me to hold on to Pick Your King.

I'm gonna have to say "crap."

Nice name for a band though.

Poison Idea had their moments. Not as many as Anti-Seen, who were basically a skinnier, more meth version of the same band, but still.

Pig Champion did do me a huge comedy service once. My band was playing at a Portland venue where he "worked" in some capacity. When we got there, he was installed in a broken sofa by the load-in door, with a huge big gulp in one hand and a handkerchief in the other, mopping his brow. His cane rested on his undulating front-butt/lap area. He saw us come in, and briefly making an excuse for his condition, said, "Summer is hard on the morbidly obese."

Thank you, Pig Champion. You were really funny then.

Not crap.

Not Crap

I can see how people may not like the early or late period stuff. However, feel the darkness (1990 i think) is a pretty amazing record. As a matter of fact, every person that I have recommended it to has liked it very much. Even though I really like Turbonegro, they basically stole this bands sound and added in the whole gay thing.

Once again, not crap.

By the way, I can't find anything on the web about Pig Champion being dead. Is this really true?

Thomas "Pig Champion" Roberts, guitarist for POISON IDEA, died at his home in Portland, Oregon, Monday night (Jan. 30). A founding member of the seminal punk band, he continued to appear with POISON IDEA throughout the late Nineties and into the new millennium, despite officially quitting the band in 1993. Variously described as "spectacularly fat," and "the single largest man in hardcore history," Roberts crowned himself "Pig Champion" after hitting an impressive 450 lbs. on the scales. The highly regarded guitarist was revered by a devoted following worldwide. No further information is available at this time.
