I was wondering if anyone has recorded the didj, I am australian and just recorded one recently and will be doing so again soon.
I understand that it is a fairly obscure instrument to some of you but there may be some of you brilliant engineers who have
I used a sm 57 directly infront of the sound hole. and a neumann u89 as a room mic. I was suprised at just how good the sm57 translated.
any sugggestions would be greatly apreciated.
Recording Didjeridoo?
2Having the player play the didjeridoo into the corner of the room (where two walls and the floor meet) can accentuate low frequency information. This can be quite useful for recording that particular instrument.

3I have always recorded didjeridoo (is this how you spell it?) at a distance (4-10 feet), rather than close-up. the sound of the player puffing is part of the sound I associate with the instrument, and I figured a close mic would just get the drone.
Good luck!

Recording Didjeridoo?
4As far as I am aware that is how it is spelt. The guy I was recording had a website and checked the spelling and everything. I dont think they taught english in tribes so it may be wrong.
the U89 would have been approx 6 ft away, it got some of the breathing, but I just wasnt happy with it At the time the didj was not an important part of the track so I didnt focus as much attention to detail. that may have been why the U89 didnt translate as well as I would have liked. Due to the fact that I was rushed for time.
He wants to do a solo thing soon and with that in mind I will have to be alot more resourceful, and go about getting the best poossible didj sound, with alot more attention to detail.
I am actually really looking forward to the session, it is good to have something slightly different.
what mics would people suggest?

5if you can afford to, use a bunch of mics different positions and hopefully a few of them will sound right.
