Live direct to two-track

I did this a lot with my go-nowhere guitar + drums duo (I think we were going to be corny and call ourselves "Duel") with a guy named Ian Meyer playing the drums. It was really fun, and I learned a ton about my past mistakes by keeping things simple.

I put my amp behind his kit to keep the guitar from being so off-center in the stereo image, so it was a good thing Ian wore those doofy "Vic Firth" ear protectors when we practiced. He stopped hitting his drums really hard, and I think that's when I stopped having as much fun. I guess I'm a caveman or something.

We recorded in the old tubing mill where I work, and all of the weird reflections and rattles sounded cool in the rests and quiet spots. I'd love to do more recordings like this since it's so cheap and easy.

i listened to this album (red light) yesterday for the first time in a while. i still like it. we did 22 songs, in order, in 2 days. i would love to do another live to two track album but would probably want to have more like 4-5 days and do a few less songs. also probably do it in a studio where the drummer could be in a separate room from the everyone else but still have visual contact. the bleed coming through 4 vocal mics sounds a bit boom boxy at times. still, it's a great way to record and nothing can beat walking out of the studio after two days with the album totally done.
