I've been drinking that "Unibroue" Quebecois beer for a few years now after first trying it up there. The Maudite (French-Canadian Bad Word) is pretty strong stuff.

If you just want to say that you've gotten a Chicago-style hot dog, Gold Coast Dogs are good too.

And there's always Weiner's Circle, if you are drunk and like being yelled at by people taking your order, while some drunken ex-frat boy is yelling "wooo!!!" behind you in line.

tim, salut!! i had never heard of herm's till this post of yours, and just finished eating a "grilled jumbo" based on your recommendation.

SO good. so much better than all the other dog/burger places in the niles/lw/skokie area. fries so much better than u-dawg-u/west/east of edens etc.

thank you for making my lunchtimes more enjoyable.

btw herm's is on dempster/mccormick a few blocks east of pita inn for anyone venturing up round here... the interior is sorta like the bunny hutch, old 70s-ish vibe. video games. i can imagine being a kid playing them with van halen blasting over the speakers...

I'm so pleased you found your way to Herm's.

Herm's does indeed slay all of the other North of Town dog/burger places I know of.

The Herm's Special is a fine burger, incidentally, esp. on black bread. Just the right ration of juicy meat, charred meat, cheeses, chewy bread, onions, and crispy bread.

They're very nice people also.

The racial slurs flying back and forth in this place really freak some people the fuck out, I love it when some college kid has no clue on what's up in there or on how to react to being called a 'skinny ass nerdy white ass honkey motherfucker' by some big fat black chick.
