I have a jumbo Gibson guitar and the pickup it came with does not do this guitar justice. I would appreciate some suggestions on a new pickup for my baby, and preferably from someone who has actually used said pickup themselves. Thanks!

Do you have an active or passive? Passive usually just sits in the sound hole, and doesn't sound as good as an Active, which uses a 9-volt battery and is installed into the guitar.

I have a gibson acoustic with an Active pickup, and it sounds fantastic through an amp. I'll try to remember to check what kind it is when I get home tonight. I had it installed years ago, so I don't remember so good.

It is an active pickup I believe because it does require a 9 volt. It was installed in the guitar when I bought it. It sits where the strap button goes at the bottom of the guitar. I would like to get something that would go where the existing pickup sits, and definately will not cut on this guitar to install an onboard pre-amp/eq or anything else.

I'd recommend the Fishman active magnetic pickups which are fairly simple to fit. I think they are called "rare earth" or something like that. I gigged with mine for about three years and it was great. Especially if you don't like that piezo sound.

I'll have to check those out. What about the L.R. Baggs pickups? Anyone used one of those?

I would strongly recommend a McIntyre pickup. I first heard one in 1998, in a Martin '0' series acoustic, and was absolutely amazed at the fact that somebody had finally made an acoustic pickup that actually made an acoustic guitar sound like an acoustic guitar when run through a PA, instead of an rough approximation of an acoustic guitar. what kind of music do you play? I've used a few seymour duncans in the past, can't say they really excited me, though their more expensive / deeper/thicker shaped one provided a wider range of tone.

But really it all depends on what you are looking to do with said pickup, what other musicians you are playing with, etc. Right now I don't use any acoustic pickups, I either play alone and mic it, or use an acoustic/electric guitar with an onboard pickup
