There's a reason this one's buried near the end of Cowboy In Sweden; its vocal denoument / chordal resolution is almost awkward. What might be haphazard is instead universally familiar. The meandering vocal implies a badly lost train of thought, distracted by the impossibly bittersweet strings and harpsichord. A stiff waltz, unwilling to commit to being minor or major, this breakup song helpfully illustrates the sad ambiguity of everyday life.

A disembodied John Ford Panavision shot of Arizona desert torn loose from the screen, stalking its own landscape, solemnly in search of a long-dead John Wayne. An exhausted, garish, agonizingly lost plaint from Newman, who, along with arranger Van Dyke Parks serve for 2:41 as pallbearers to the old American West.
