Start with Painful and I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, then listen to Electropura and if u really really really like them, then listen to And THen nothing turned it insides out. That last album im not so into, its more like lounge music, no guitars and no rock. The first 3 i mentioned are the most solid. Trust me, dont bother with anything else.

while i think their last album was a big step down, i don't think it's bad at all...i definitely wouldn't recommend it as a starting point...
Yo La Tengo
13I really do like Electropura
The guitar sound on the album is killer. really washy at times, and often very saturated. Great guitar playing, a nice approach.
The vocals are better than i remember Yo La Tengo having.
While listening for the first time, I got to the middle of the album and thought, "Wow... this is really NICE!".
Thanks for the help guys!

I could have been a contender...
Yo La Tengo
14hey all. i thought i'd join just to post this recomendation:
'painful' really is the one for me, it totally blew me away when i first heard it as a small child, and still is a great record. they've changed in direction quite a lot since then, but thats one of the good things about this band, the way every once in a while they'll just head of on some tangent for a few albums. You should also try you're best to get a copy of the nuclear war ep - the 3rd track especially is beautiful.

Yo La Tengo
15James McNew of Yo La Tengo has been putting out records under the name DUMP for many many years. They are great records!! Like YLT, he goes from home recordings and song-writer stuff to fuzzed out pop to open-ended experimentation. He often plays Dump songs with Yo La Tengo, too.
Also, James' Dump will be playing a show in Chicago on Jan. 15th (opening for the Coctails, actually) at the Abbey Pub. Tickets are already on sale. This will be the second Dump show in Chicago ever even though he has been doing Dump for at least ten years.

Yo La Tengo
17Yo La Tengo have a lot of material. And while I am trying to indulge in an album here and an album there, I really don't want to rush it and take on like 3 or 4 albums at once.
Are there any songs that just really stand out on maybe some of their more down-time/obscure albums that I should check out?
If so give me a little list of some tracks.
To make this easy... what would you put on a Yo La Tengo mix to give someone a fair representation of the band?
Thanks for the help thus far guys. I dig the reccomendations so far...

however, I already wrote:I can Hear the Heart Beat as One is fantastic! It's like a mix tape, but really it's just one band.
That is the help I offer.
