12I recently got to see them outside at Millenium Park, downtown Chicago (ok, a few months ago...) with a bunch of kids between the ages of 4 and 8. Thankfully it was an early show. The set started with 'the rock'. The kids were hooked! They were like zombies watching the two Johns play drums. It was a great show.

15If I knew how this waffle factor business worked, I'd say "not crap with a waffle factor of x." That x would be pretty high, however. Not crap chiefly because of the majestic moments on "Millions Now Living Will Never Die," high waffle factor because I suspect (read: I haven't listened to anything since "TNT") that they've lapsed into parody.
An iffy, iffy not crap.

16I dislike their ouevre except for Standards. That record is shazam.
I would be willing to vote not Crap on the strength of Standards alone. That is a very beautiful record with ill beats and wicked guitar tone.
yes, I am using those word on purpose.
The rest of their catalog bores me to suicide.
Although they are good live.

17I love the self-titled album. Love. It’s a very personal album for me. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to it in the company of someone else, nor do I think I’d want to.
On the other hand, I don’t understand all the accolades Millions Now Living Will Never Die gets. Do not get it. Not one bit.
Whenever I last heard TNT I thought it was really stupid. A stupid album. Okay, smart guys: stupid.
I agree that Standards is surprisingly good. The latest one, however, seems terrible.
Not crap, WF 6.

18Their ouvre has its ups and downs, although I'll state that there's stuff I really like on every record up through Standards, with maybe the peak at TNT. That said, the new one just seemed like an exhausted retread, and just didn't work for me.

Nice.
Now, Tortoise:
I enjoy the Tortoise. I have the deep love for the first record. Deep.
I have the secondary deep love for the 12" single "Gamera."
The third love is for "Millions" but it is almost equalled to the second love via the "Millions" Japanese import which contains "Gamera."
"TNT", it took me awhile. It was a different animal, not so much the drippy 70's amplifier/speaker lovliness, rather a clean digital animal. Yet I do like it. I have the first like of Tortoise for this record.
"Standards" is an excellent record to soundtrack hour #2 of a party. Personal listening, I like it the second, but have rarely listened to it outside of the initial 6 month period.
"It's All Around You" has strong liking. I purchased this in Germany and it was in foremost rotation for a week's travel. The airplane ride back also benefitted, but have not listened to it much in past months.
Hmm. A good Tortoise shuffle on the iPod is seemingly merited.
Damn, though. Nothing beat witnessing "Gamera" live circa "Millions" period.
Tortoise did a lot to broaden my music habits at a time that was necessary. Who would have expected that music on the first record from ex-Tar Babies, Bastro, Precious Wax Drippings (& Poster Children) and Eleventh Dream Day?
Not I, sirs. Not I.
Not me. That's for sure.
That's a lasting impression.

20On 1/6/06 Pitchfork reported that Tortoise was releasing a box set of all the remix singles today.
I can't find anything about it anywhere now. Does anyone know anything?
