People say that the police exist to act in favor of only the rich. This is often true, but not always. When the police arrest drunken drivers, they are acting in favor of the public. I can understand suspicion of the police, but this is one circumstance where I feel like they are doing their jobs -- protect, serve, etc. The roads are dangerous enough already, don't you think?
A DUI is a major inconvenience for the individual who receives it, but there are ways to minimize its impact. For a first offense (assuming no criminal record), the person is going to have to pay more insurance, do public service, attend classes, etc.
Out of curiosity -- Are there any first-world countries that do not enforce DUI laws?
An anecdote on the topic:
A friend and I were driving to a movie theater at night. Along a dark stretch of road that moves quickly (Route 53, for those of you familiar with the Western suburbs), we almost struck a jogger. This woman was wearing an all-black bodysuit in the dead of night, jogging on a shoulderless road where cars routinely hit expressway-type speeds. My friend was driving, and he didn't hit her. But we didn't see her until the very last second, i.e., it would probably have been too late to swerve, had she been in the car's path. I figure this woman was either idiotic or borderline suicidal.
But the point -- if we had been drinking, and an accident had occurred, the alcohol would have been a factor and it would have been bad for us, specifically for my friend, the driver. It's perhaps sad that I think about a potentially fatal accident in this way. The runner would be dead no matter what -- the only remaining question pertains to the occupants of the car. I think it would be easier to come to terms with being unable to avoid a negligent pedestrian despite being in sound driving condition, than it would be to cope with having killed the same pedestrian while drunk.
That is a story about a completely stupid jogger putting herself in harm's way. Now consider what could happen to a completely innocent person when Tony fucking LaRussa falls asleep behind the wheel of his SUV.
Jesus H. The police do some terrible shit, but one legit function of their job is to pull drunks off the road.
