just the overheads + kick mic inside the bass drum

The previous recording sounded cool as well. I remember you said you want the sound to fit Funk. I think you hit the spot. I myself would tune the snare lower, but I promised myself not to play funk.

24eliya : don't remember saying i'd want to make funk
the snare is quite low in fact. i've been thinking about it an tried to tune it as low as possible. if i tune it lower i don't think the sound would be good. maybe a 6'5 snare would do the job. it's a 5'5 here
yep i'm lucky to have all that shit in my basement and experiment for hours...
here's the last take for tonight :
m201 on snare
mk012 overheads
D112 kick
and two room mics : a sm57 and a tbone cd56. both dynamic. they're in the room next to where i record the drums, aiming opposite, to the walls.

You didn't say somewhere you want the drums to fit funk? anyhow, I like this take the most I think. This one sounds awesome and the room is complimenting the drums. I think I got the "problem" with the snare. you need to hit it harder, I know you're already hitting hit harder than you used to be, but a bit more will make it just right. In this take it sounds the best so far, in my opinion.

26thanks !
i didn't hit it as hard as i wanted on this take cause it was getting late and my girlfriend's watching CSI
i'm EQing the room mics a bit right now. removing some mud around 400hz... i'll try different room mics placement tomorrow
getting closer and closer ....
funny how a sm-57 can sound much better than any convolution reverb plugin
oh, and someone else wrote about funk

28you're right
ok this morning's take :
i thought the overhead's still sounded a bit close and harsh. i read an article on SOS, and saw this picture :
i placed the overheads this way.
the room mics are in the same room this time, aiming directly at the wall in front of the drumkit, about 5 meters away
here's the result without the room mics
http://motthieu.free.fr/drumkit58.mp3
and with the room mics
http://motthieu.free.fr/drumkit58r.mp3
+3db on the room mics
http://motthieu.free.fr/drumkit58rB.mp3
the drumkit sounds more natural and a lot of the harshness of the cymbals is gone. i definitely like this mic placement.
now again that snare snare could be better

29Nice kick sound man. Cymbals are to hire in the mix and the snare still an't right for me tho.
how about trying another room mic in front of the (say 4ft away, 3ft hire) the kit and mix it in. Might help capture the kick, snare & hats marrige.
