In regard to rock music?

Is fashion a harmless part of rock music or does it hinder the legitimacy of the art form by restricting it to people young enough to dress the part? I always felt that a band having a particular style of clothing or image was a given in rock music and this never bothered me until I realized how silly it all looks. Is fashion a respectable means of separating rock music from mainstream culture (I mean really mainstream as in American culture) or does it make us look like a big joke?
