Hi Kevin,

sorry to hijack th thread. realistically, I won't be able to get an electrical any time soon, but I just got a job where I can write music stuff off, so maybe if something comes through in a few years.....(right.)

anyway, how difficult would it be for you to make an all aluminum version of my hamburg 220?:

dear kerble, that'd be a very bad idea because if john hall (rickenbacker c.e.o.) ever sees that guitar he might sue the fucking shit out of kevin. he's quite the zealot over his patents.

yep. he shuts down u.s. ebay auctions of the japanese copies of his guitars and basses. not even shitting you. do a search for a greco, ibanez, or univox 4001/4003. one might pop up. watch the auction. it'll be pulled within a day.

there's a chinese company or two selling rick copies in the uk. try to get one shipped to the states. won't happen.

i was tempted to have a rick copy made, but after seeing so many people hassled by the company, i decided to not.

you might fly under the radar, but, you never know, someone might see it and rat you out on the rick forum. i bet they do that.

Yeah sorry, Rics are a no go. They are crazy about controlling their designs. Whats strange is Gibson and the likes sued Ibanez based on Headstock designs in the 70s under trademark laws. There are only so many shapes and most guitars are based on the 3 basic, but Rickenbacker is the exception on all fronts.

It boils down to if it can be mistaken for an original for the most part...but again Rickenbacker kills everything no matter the contruction. There was even a guy making the horseshoe pickups and they put him under from what i understand.

I would advise very, very strongly against dealing with Fatdawg and Subway Guitars, especially ordering a guitar to be made for you.

If you get the guitar at all (not a guarantee by any stretch), it will take a ridiculously long time. You will have no communication during the months and months that you wait for the guitar.

I recommend checking out the shop in person- from a sociological perspective it's a great glimpse of what Berkeley must have really been like at one point in history- but the whole operation is psychotically flaky.
