yuh, the hamburg is almost identical in neck style. the dakota has a slightly wider and less tapered neck, and a few more accessible frets, but the neck profile is slimmer, so it balances out.

loved the sound. now i want one.

mine sounds glorious.
kerble is right.

I would advise very, very strongly against dealing with Fatdawg and Subway Guitars, especially ordering a guitar to be made for you.

If you get the guitar at all (not a guarantee by any stretch), it will take a ridiculously long time. You will have no communication during the months and months that you wait for the guitar.

I recommend checking out the shop in person- from a sociological perspective it's a great glimpse of what Berkeley must have really been like at one point in history- but the whole operation is psychotically flaky.

So I got my guitar! It took a while, but it his defense I halted production to mail in some pickups, and took about 2 weeks after it was completed to mail the check. Still, way longer than quoted, but thats ok, I wasnt in a super rush. Heres my quick review so far:

The guitar arrived well packed, and shipped fedex, with a signature required, which is nice. I had to go pick it up at the airport because I missed the truck. First off, its the wrong color. It was supposed to be natural, instead its fucking green, but not solid green, stained green, so you can still see the wood grain. The staining job its self is AWFUL. I had provided the pickups, and was anticipating the pickguard being red-pearloid (which I also requested). Well, the pickguard is cream colored, which is suppose matches the green well, but not what I had requested. Since the pickups were NOS Dearmonds, they came with their own mounting brackets, which needed to be used since the pups themselves are a non-standard size. Well, the brackets were cream colored, which would have looked stupid on a dark red/black pickguard. So I painted them black. Well now I have a cream pickguard with black brackets. perfect. I think I can get the paint off of them, so that might not be a huge deal, but its annoying. Now, normally I would be pissed off, and the guitar would be back on its way to California, but jesus, this thing sounds and plays great!!! I have only used it through my Acoustic 127 combo, which is kind of my beater amp, but it sounds and plays great so far. It holds a tuning really well too! I would maybe advise against ordering one custom, because it took a while, and didnt even end up being what I wanted cosmetically. But they stock them in the store, so there would be no surprises if you got one off the shelf. Now I just need to figure out how I can get strings for a baritone that tunes A-A, without having to buy a set of bass strings and a set of guitar strings and waste money.

Wow, gebo, what a story. Nice looking guitar, though...but I agree I'd feel a bit pissed off if I ordered custom natural and it came up green.

I just bought a Danelectro baritone which I'm tuning down to A-A, on its regular strings. I'd think any set of baritone strings would be fine tuning down a step, unless your strings are already floppy at B-B.

Thanks for the review, Gebo. First-hand input like that is hard to come by.

So you say it plays and sounds like a dream, right? And that ordering a FatDawg/Subway guitar might not be so troublesome if you just select a standard model, right?

That might be enough to keep a standard JizzBlaster in the running for in my agonizing search for a next guitar.
