Not crap.

BClark wrote:hey, anyone see that john woo movie "bullet in the head"? which pays homage to multiple vietnam films, including this one... the whole boat going up the river thing... and then they have to play russian roulette which i guess is from deer hunter... or maybe this stuff (boats in a river, russian roulette in prison camps) went on all the time in vietnam, and nothing is meant as references to those films... one way or another, bullet in the head is great!

That movie is just completely fucking crazy and over the top in nearly every way. I love it.

I love Apocalypse Now, but I think the whole boat thing is done much better in Aguirre: The Wrath Of God.

I think 'the whole boat going up the river thing' is amazing in both films. Apocalypse Now has caught a lot of flak for being too fantastic from Vietnam war buffs and soldiers who were actually there. But to me, the element of fantasy and mystery is what really makes the movie such a success. It breaks free from the boundaries of a straight Vietnam flick and turns it into an epic with a universal storyline which transcends time and place. Which is really the virtue of Joseph Conrad's original story.
Aquirre had that aspect in common - it didn't have to be Spanish conquistadors in the Amazon basin, the story would have worked with any long and perilous journey into the unknown.

Oh, and Apocalypse Now?
