A good, occasionally great band, always a weird band. Like really weird. My friend Matt whose much more of a BOC scholar/apologist then I am made the astute observation recently that BOC was sort of like the hard rock equivalent to Steely Dan, which I think is pretty accurate, though I much prefer the music of BOC to the Dan's.

The first two albums are pretty incredible all the way through (real talk, I like their faux-MC5 jams better then the MC5) and everything after that can be hit or miss, eventually way more miss then then hit. Though I bet there are some great or at least bizarrely entertaining moments from every point in in their career.

Obv huge bonus points for the Meltzer connection. Patti Smith, sure.

And if the only thing they ever did was inspire the Minutemen that would probably earn them a not crap from me, but fortunately they did a lot more.

Not Crap, also that mix hamburglarized posted is way not crap.

I am a big fan of laser light shows. If you tell me a band has a laser light show I'm there. I figure that even if the band is so-so the laser light show is going to be cool. This is like the future and what could be more cool than rock music and laser light shows.

In a era when laser light shows were as common as fog machines (or quarters in a porno parlor), The Who, Funkadelic and others toured with major mind bending shows. Who would forget the experience of red grids across the tops of stadiums and the back cast shadows like in the movie Tommy or the beam being bounced off Bootsy’s mirrored glasses. This was all replaced with cheaper pyro and inflatable (like the inflatable penis for the stones). But back then the future seemed bright and we did not have a true understanding of the backsliding that would occur. What would a Jimi Hendrix show been had he survived to the laser light show era?

Yes, back when giants walked the earth and laser light shows were their currency, Blue Oyster Cult had the best laser light show of all, your ears rang for weeks and your eyes were burnt too. This show was beyond awesome. In addition to having 6 guitar players on stage at the end the lasers (which for some reason I think would be illegal for heath reasons now or regulated for safety in some way). Other bands would rent their laser light system and it would be listed on the bill. Yes the light show was famious in it's own rite. Black Sabbath or Styx (with the Blue Oyster Cult laser light show). This system required a power plant transformer next to the stage). A experence so intense that a adult dyper is required. Now the laser show is all but forgotten no doubt being stored in the back yard of a house under a tarp in Levitown.

In the waning days of the Laser light shows I saw the Blue Oyster Cult laser light show one last time at the Palladium in NYC as part of the last Von Elmo show in the early 80’s (that show in itself is a great story which I will not revel unless I am plied with beers). In any case the use of the Laser light show with the awesomeness of Von Elmo was so fantastic that words can not describe the brain hemorrhaging experience. I believe a non licensee operator had the thing up “Full Tilt” for this infamous show.

Blue Oyster Cult for bring it (it being defined as the ultimate mobile laser light show) and rocking hard. Very not crap.

I ask the question, with all the declassified star wars research and army surplus and the fall of the iron curtain why has the use of computers and lasers not returned to the rocking arena. No more dancers I want lasers! (and maybe robot dancers with lazers)
