They do look a bit shite, but from the Moulton Website:

Q Aren't smaller wheels harder to pedal?

No, because:-

The gears are chosen so that they correspond to pedalling a bicycle with large wheels.

The smaller frontal area results in less aerodynamic drag.
The lower inertia means that you can accelerate faster.

If you are still doubtful, consider the HPVs (Human Powered Vehicles) developed for the ultimate performance - many of these use the unique 17" Moulton wheels and tyres fitted to the AM series bicycles.

Q How well does it perform?

An AM bicycle holds the world speed record for bicycles of conventional riding position at 51mph, fully faired.

The AM bicycle has successfully completed the Race Across America (RAAM) - finishing the course of 3117 miles in 10 days 15 hours and 1 minute.

Owners of AM bicycles use them successfully for commuting, touring the world and for racing. The APB bicycles are ideal for commuting, touring and use off-road.

It's not an option. The train has a small compartment that fits a folding cycle or a skateboard- nothing more. On any given day it is wall to wall with commuters. There's no room for a full sized bike or even a BMX size bike.

I have considered the idea of two beater bikes, one on each end, but I like the idea of a bike I can fold up and take with me, thus guaranteeing I can get to the train. In Baltimore/DC, a bike left at a train station locked overnight is asking for vandalism or theft. Not that I would care with a beater, but that would fuck up my commute a bit if I were relying on this day in and day out. Kicked in wheels seem to also be common.

(aside- not directed at anyone particular: This is a General Discussion thread, not a Crap/Not Crap thread. I was hoping for some enlightening info about FOLDING COMPACT BIKES, not the opinions of people who want to tell me how I should commute and how folding cycles are stupid, etc. etc.. I've done this commute for three years. I have considered probably everything anyone could recommend here in regards to getting to work. I'm settled on the idea of a FOLDING COMPACT BIKES. If you have experience with folding bikes and want to tell me more about the offerings, quality, maintenance challenges compared to other FOLDING COMPACT BIKES then do it- especially Bromptons and Dahons as they have struck my fancy. Otherwise, kindly shut the fuck up.

I'm not coming here to compare Bromptons to full sized Road Bianchis or Cannondales or to Vespas or Harleys. I'm talking about FOLDING COMPACT BIKES. In the same manner if someone wants an opinion on a Under $500 New Acoustic Guitar you don't go tell them to buy an Electrical 500 instead. Jesus.)

What about separating compact bikes, huh, huh?

Moultons aside you'll look like a lady on a compact folding bike. Either that or a physicist.

Oh, missed the shut the fuck up bit.

Are you really expecting some the hard rockers on here to have experience of a folding bike? These guys listen to AC fucking DC. C'mon. Ask one on ROCK!

Sorry, I wasn't aware that it's such a touchy subject, I also never meant to cause a heart attack.

If you spent 3.5+ hours commuting every day, you might be a little grumpy too. Thanks.

Actually, I would look more like a fat walrus on a folding bike than a lady.

Yeah, you are right. These folding bikes are for pussies. I'll go to the premier folding bike forum if anyone can direct me to such a thing :D
