I hate these guitars, I don't know about USA but in the UK you can somehow find yourself on their mailing list and keep getting sent shit little magazines which, surprise surprise have an Ovation guitar on every fucking page!
These things sound as close to a cardboard box with rubber bands attached, as any guitar you can buy.
Ugly headstock too.... and shit name..... horrible endorsements.

The electrics were stopped in the late '70's/early '80's.
I know, but I am just wondering why? Like what were they thinking ya know? They made great guitars and now they make plastic guitars. It's odd.
Ovation made some quality electrics, but they just didn't sell. A guitar book I had said that they always seemed to be just behind the prevailing trends.
The reason that the acoustics have sold so well is that people think they sound good plugged in, which as far as I can tell is their main advantage.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Which is funny if you think about it, take a shitty piece of plastic, put some lame fancy pants wood design on it, then add a nice pickup. What's not to like?

17Very cool Magnum III, llllllllllllllllllllllll.
I'll be surprised if these things don't become one of the holy grails of the bass world someday, right up there with the RD Artist, and, dare I say, Travis Bean.
About the bowlback acoustics: don't get me wrong, I really dislike them, but, like so many other things in life, if you close your eyes and give it a go, they'll get the job done.

18I think when they first came out with the bowed plastic back they hyped it as having more projection and focus then a wooden backed acoustic. I think that was part of the marketing. Plus they were futuristic. And also weren't they the first stock pickup-ed acoustic? That sounded pretty good when plugged in.
I always thought plastic guitars were a bad idea. Yuck.
I had a rich kid friend in high school and he got his parents to buy the top of the line one for him. I remember it was expensive even back in 1982. It was the one with the little holes in the top. Idiot.
That's kids last name was Weiner. Seriously. That says it all.

19People only ever SEE these acoustics THEN buy one, they would surely never HEAR one THEN buy it.
I hate DI'd acoustic guitar so much, I'd rather hear it through an SM57 than that. Someone asked me if I wanted to use their (Taylor) acoustic's DI signal in a studio the other day, I declined, then as I started setting up a C12 and a Neumann 184 to record it they STILL seemed puzzled as to why I didn't want to record the pickup.
