For me, the last thing i want to be thinking when i'm watching a film is "this guy/gal is such an amazing actor!" I have always thought a really good actor doesn't give off the impression they are even acting. It's often when thinking back over something that it hits you how great someone's performance was, and for me at least, it more often than not is something really understated and hard to pinpoint. Just that they really appear to be a certain character.

Don't get me wrong, there's something i (sometimes) really like about the DDL style of performance as it can indeed be very compelling and captivating, but i never really feel i am really watching an actual character. I just feel like i'm watching DDL acting acting acting. And then some more acting.

De Niro. Yeah he's done some real stinkers, but i can't think of an actor who hasn't in the name of a nice deserved paycheck. Thinking about it though, De Niro has done an awful lot of shit hasn't hasn't he. I think i may give him the benefit of the doubt based on his genuinely awesome roles though.

I'm kinda with this sentiment. That's why I actually prefer the work of sorta not as highly regarded character actors- people like Harry Dean Stanton or James Remar- over the usual cast of scenery chewers, whether they be Jack Nicholson, DeNiro, Day Lewis, etc.etc....

Don't get me wrong, great performance is what it is...but when people try to when Oscars it all gets a little overbearing.
You call me a hater like that's a bad thing

I'm not so sure of that. It's not the same disease, obviously, but De Niro did a phenomenal job in portraying a severe nervous disease in "Awakenings". In fact, of all the roles he's played, I think "My Left Foot" would be one of the one's De Niro would be most successful in of Day-Lewis'.

I can't think of one of DDL's roles DeNiro couldn't at least be passable in.
I was gonna mention Awakenings as well.
DDL could not have been Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas, nobody else could have. Could not have been Ace in Casino, nobody else could have.
