This sounds pretty accurate but I think it was genuinely because he thought that Barry thought he was being sarcastic. I can understand thinking his reaction was disproportionate because it was. He went to apologise because he assumed only sarcasm could illicit this response. Shock can make you do ridiculous things.

That's the thing, I think people should be able to just walk up to someone and not be scared. Engage in communication and if the person being engaged does not want to, then just ignore or diffuse without hostility or anger. "stupid things" is a very relative term, so that does not really work.

People should not be afraid of each other.
