My father in law is a professional horn player and has a little recording/listening setup in his music room . He got a pair of powered bookshelf speakers that sound totally fine and were definitely in your price range. I'm pretty sure the brand is Audioengine, although I think there are a lot of good ported bookshelf speakers out there using small onboard amps.

Imaging wasn't stable, mids seemed distorty and there's this weird exaggeration around 125Hz that muddies it up. Was able to EQ the 125Hz stuff and that cleaned things up, but the midrange distortion was still annoying. So I'm returning them. These got a lot of really good recommendations, and the brief time I heard them at my in-laws they sounded ok, so maybe I got a bad pair?

Dragging my live rig out from spot to spot, I'm frequently confronted w/ weird eq spikes. That wouldn't correct the distortion of course...I'd probably contact their customer service. My room has some issues, but I had a small pair of B&W speakers in the same place and they sounded fine. If the distortion wasn't also an issue I'd have probably thrown some EQ at it. I think I just want another pair that's like the B&Ws, but not $1100, or whatever I paid for them
