For my money, there are no snare drum with more dynamic range than a wooden Gretsch snare. Not always useful for rock stuff, but if you need to go from a whisper to "louder than a guillotine," here's your drum:

You ain't kidding. He's such an incredibly musical drummer — I don't know how else to put it, but that's the only adjective that comes to mind. Killer tuning, too.
