Black Metal Question

Black metal can be subdivided into about ten other tedious genres: anti-Christian, Nordic Aryan, Viking etc. Basic worldview is against Judeo-Christian morality. Black metal traces its roots to a terrible pentagrammed look-at-me album called 'Black Metal' by a terrible British band called Venom, who practised Satanism about as much as Cliff Richard. To be a proper black metaller, you have to wear corpsepaint as much as possible. Yes, even while hoovering.

Having listened a few years ago to tons of this nonsense, I can say that black metal does NOT rock. It's a style characterised by heavy processed production, extreme changes of speed and dynamic, Cookie Monster vocals, old hat metal riffs and is frequently infected by cheesy goth-romanticism. The church-burning murder stuff by a tiny, tiny handful of Scandinavians in the 90s was about the most interesting thing about it. The outsider appeal is basically in its extremity and its aesthetics. The music is very, very little to write home about. Lightning Bolt sound more Satanic.

Ok, so I just did a little research to see if I could find one rocker in all of Black Metal. And I did! I give you....

Goatwhore!

According to Relapse, this band is to be classified as Black Metal (inc. members of Soilent Green).

Also, Burzum? They're pretty alright. I tried.

I remember that album. When I was 14 I could really relate to that song "Red Light Fever". At the time I also needed a woman oh so bad.

I'd look like a geek at a Yo La Tenga show. I could never be as cool as those guys.

I must be getting old because church burning and murder just don't thrill me anymore.
