Not crap, but very overrated.

Piper is good, mainly because Barrett is such a clear influence on Edward Ka-Spel of the Legendary Pink Dots. Had the Floyd gone that route it would've been cool. I don't really like the other vocalists. They do the job but it's a bit, ok?

Meddle is good too. And Dark Side is fine but holy shit Floyd fans are crazy. I've watched a couple of react videos of that album and there's always a bunch of people like NOOO you're doing it all wrong you have to listen to it in this exact way and so on. Then again I've been similar to that with a couple of things so I can't talk too much.

'Piper', 'Saucerful', and 'Ummagumma' = NC

The rest = meh

Long ago when I bought acid from a Papa John's co-worker, and knowing it was going to be my first time, he enthusiastically recommended that I lay down in grass and put on Floyd. I did not heed his advice and listened to The Necks and Glenn Branca instead.

didja know Nick Mason has a Ferrari 250 GTO that he still races? Bought it with some of his take from DSOTM. Almost 78 years old and driving a $45+ million car in anger is NC. There's video of him giving Brian Johnson (who used to own and race a Lola T70) a ride that's pretty fun to see.

Won't crap on The Floyd but don't listen to much but Animals these days and kinda don't miss slogging through some of the early stuff because it was expected you'd listen to it

I mentioned in the Tipping the Sacred Cows thread that I listened to Dark Side of the Moon a few years ago for the first time, and I enjoyed it. I like a few tracks on Ummagumma as well, I checked that out b/c Michael Gira of Swans said that record influenced The Seer.

Other than that, I've never been much of a Floyd fan, though I never hated them or anything. I'll give them a N/C.

Look, It's Floyd. Not Crap in any possible way. The band went through many phases, like any of the long lasting NAME bands of that era. And, like most of them post '75 saw a stark drop in quality.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Barrett era, 'tis it's own beast. Am indifferent towards Animals, Final Cut, The Wall. Everything after that is garbage.

HOWEVER,

MEDDLE, OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, UMMAGUMMA, Wish You Were Here, and Darkside are COMPLETELY realized musical productions.

"Live at Pompeii" is one of the greatest rock films ever. if only for "Lotta people fink our musics about drugs.... 'snot about drugs 't'all."

IMHO you can't say NC on Floyd while calling the Syd era C. It makes zero sense, and actually hurts what's left of my brain.

Johnny Doglands wrote: Wed Dec 08, 2021 10:41 am I wonder if I'm going to be on my own here, but I prefer the Syd Barrett era. I'm in it for the wierdness. DSOTM is the one everyone loves and to me it's the sound of a prog band gone pop. Not wierd pop anymore either. Disappointing.

Mason and Wright are/were okay, Waters can be a bit much but he's a good bass player...I think the problem for me is I don't like Gilmour. I can't put my finger on why exactly. Your common or garden musician of a certain age seems to worship the guy and I've never felt anything good towards him. He can play yes, but his playing and singing just doesn't grab me in any way, shape or form.

I'd still give them a solid NC though, for the bits I like.

Let me know when we are having meetings...
