The key difference between these two is that *warning severe generalization ahead* the age group that will look at Neil Young as "misreading the zeitgeist" in a subconscious way right now is not the age group that is falling over themselves to listen to Neil Young records. Whereas Lars Ulrich was pointing his "misreading the zeitgeist" directly at an age group where he could/should have been selling his music.

While I don't care about J.R or N.Y at all, I had never previously heard this little gem from 1985 that had been conveniently flushed down the memory hole:

“You go to the supermarket and you see a faggot behind the fucking cash register, you don’t want him to handle your potatoes.”

One might charitably discribe that statement as misinformation.

Neil flirted with being a conservative in the 1980s. It didn't take.

Wow, that sucks.

I think the obvious question then isn't "Has [person] ever said or done something shitty?" but, rather "Has [person who said or did something shitty] grown up since then?"
I guitar Conformists.

Wow, I must admit I heard this in Lars' voice until I Googled it. Actually I still do. But only because it's more funny than Neil's awful crinkle of a mouth-sound. However it is indeed a NY quote and is pretty disappointing to read.

Regarding the original question, I'm waiting to see if Neil comes out with his own direct-to-Pono streaming service.

Big surprise, all of the pop culture heroes turned out to be bad people.

As far as whether he misread the zeitgeist, time will tell. Very few people actively disliked Napster. Spotify already has trouble with its brand. It’ll come down to who’s more popular.

I would imagine Young has more fans than Rogan, and Rogan fans probably come off as repellent to the general public. On the other hand, I don’t think the NY quote is getting buried, or will stay buried much longer.

It was in the Shakey biography, but I think they bleeped out the slur.

It would be very zeitgeist if one of the worst things he ever said 40 years ago suddenly became a splashy news story and started a short lived moment to cancel Neil Young.
