I think the homebrews are cool but will probably never touch the EMTs. Plate also seems to be the one thing that has been readily emulated in the digital realm since the CMOS, 8 bit days. If I may channel my own Bishopdante, what I'd like to try is a spring as big as a plate. Maybe push 5 or 10 watts into a couple garage door springs with a speaker motor ripped from a table radio or practice amp.

wow that reminds me I was going to try to do some experiments along these lines with the harp out of an old piano but sorta forgot to pick it up from a friend who was getting rid of it.

Thicker spring is only going to give you a lower end resonances. Nothing about using a heavier spring will accomplish anything other than raising the wattage of the driver. Springs are easy, and available how they work best.

I always wonder how easily one could recreate whatever magic the AKG bx20 and bx10 owners swear by. The BX20 looks like it has 3 or 4 foot springs in it. My Soundworkshop rack mounted deal has foot long springs (and is pretty cool). I suspect the 'plate like' presence from these now rare and pricey units is more than spring length alone. They're said to be usable on drums without the telltale "boing" on the attack which makes me wonder what the electronics have going on.

I did this, and posted sound samples on the old forum. I still have it set up in front of my kit but don't have the channels right now to add a piano reverb track. It works well but is pretty subtle in a mix of loud music.
