Love both, though I drop off at certain points w/ both (post-Wowee w/ Pavement, post-Bakesale w/ Sebadoh). Sebadoh was my favorite band from ages 14-16, so around when Bakesale and Harmacy came out.

I probably listen to Pavement more often these days, though I've had a new appreciation for the Vs. Helmet/Rocking The Forest-era. Jason's songs by the time of Bakesale are much stronger than Spiral ever got.

Fuck, I think this is kind of a draw, maybe slightly in favor to Pavement for not doing instrument swapping.

1) Pavement’s first few EPs and most of their first three LPs aren’t boring
2) Half of Lou Barlow’s songs seem to either be about J Mascis, his girlfriend/wife, or smoking weed. That’s boring.
Nailed it. I like me some Sebadoh but Pavement is better.

Also, one of my favorite rock interviews was when they asked Mascis about how his relationship with Lou soured. In his stoned sounding croak he detailed how when Lou joined Dino he was really self conscious and quiet. Then over some years of playing in the band he became more confident and outgoing, which was the first time J and Murphy realized they didn't like him.

Back when I was young, I prefered Sebadoh to major label Dino simply because the latter had sold out and gone "classic rock" while the former kept it indie, lo-fi and wimsy. With age, I recognize the error of my ways: even at their absolute *worst*, Dino was better than Sebadohs winy indie-rock pap. Eric Gaffney might have added some freaky edge but not nearly enough to make up for Barlows miserable self-pity ballads and the terribly standard US "indie-rock" upon display.

Pavement by a zillion Miles and I say this as someone who had no use for anything they did after Crooked rain and didn't love that album either. Still, those early EPs as well as Slanted... shits over Sebadohs entire discography...
