Floors in Studio A?

First off, let me say, nice website, it's nice to see a studio website that actually has something to learn from it!

Thanks.

I noticed in the pictures of the rooms "Kentucky" and I think "Centerfield" that there appear to be grates around the edges of the floors? Is this right? If not, what is going on with these floors, anything special?

Since no one has answered yet ( I was kinda waiting for steve or greg to jump in first) and I don't want there to be too long of a lag time before people's questions are answered, I'll give you the simple explination.

Yes, there is a grating that you can see around the floor in Kentucky in Studio A, but not in Center Field. Actually, there is a grating between the floor and the walls in ALL of the rooms in Studio A except Center Field.

There is a basement below Studio A that has rooms that are the same dimensions as the rooms directly above them. The grating around the floor allows sound to travel from the room above into the basement where it will decay somewhat before returning back to the upper part of the room. This helps keep room nodes from building up in the room and as a result gives you more natural sounding spaces to record in.

I'm sure steve or bob (if he would ever join on here) could explain it better than I could so, steve, feel free to edit my post if I've gotten any part of it incorrect.

I plan on taking a close up picture of that grating soon and putting it on the Kentucky page for clarity.

Hope that helped some.

In Center Field it is normal oak hardwood flooring (#2 multi-colored no knots) with a stripe of walnut around the edge
In Kentucky we have an assortment of recycled oak. Some of the wood came from the old kitchen that we demolished, and some from an abandoned Chicago Recording Co. studio. We put the same walnut trim on that room. It has a more mixed size look to it in there.

As far as the vents are concerned. They are designed to lessen the blow of bass build-up that comes with small rooms. The vent takes the edge off that a bit allowing sound to travel freely into the room below (expansion chamber) and not reflect immediately back. It acts as a wide band (low Q) Hemholz Resonator.
We have this for Studio A's Control Room, Kentucky, and Alcatraz.

I was there in December and owe John and the guys in Shellac a big thanks for showing me around before rehearsal. It is a gorgeaous facility and the website is great. I, too, noticed the grating and thought it odd when John pointed out where the woodshop is located. Does furniture building have to be scheduled or is the shop built with some seriously badass isolation?
