I went to our local HandsOff gathering. It was pretty impressive for this location. Tanking 401Ks and destroying government agencies that people depend on seemed to bring out a whole bunch of retirees. It was technically along a state highway that's also the main drag and the local police didn't show up at all. The highway patrol rolled through a couple times and sort of politely asked people not to get hit by cars and stay out of the traffic lane.

The Chicago Hands Off was pretty big. Bigger than we thought and we were there. So proud of everyone who showed up. Lots of people over the age of 70. The median age had to be 50. Lots of young people, just amazing how many older people there was...and vets.

Everyone was cool. We met a retired couple that lives near us that volunteers at our farmers market doing blood donations. The guy was a vet, too. We're definitely going to donate when the market opens back up!

My sister in law is waking up politically and has never been to a protest. She was crying and emotional about all the energy that was going on. We were also able to bring another friend.

I had my dad and step mom over for dinner last night. They have been pretty hardcore conservatives their whole lives. However, my dad has always hated Trump, going way back when I was a kid, so he's never been on Trump's side. My step-mom never suffers fools. While my dad used to say during the first Trump administration, "Hate the man, love the policies" (because he's an old school ditto-head and worshipper of The Heritage Foundation), he gave up on all of it after Trump 1. Anyway, I just bring this up, because for the first time ever, my wife and I were talking about how we went to the protest, and they both were very supportive. What surprised me, though, was that my step mom pulled out her phone and showed me a picture of three of her sisters also at the protest. She has a huge family, 7 sisters total. They are all south-side Irish and very conservative. They've never been to a protest before. It's amazing how bad it is, that it's gotten these old ladies out in the streets for the first time in their lives and my dad cheering me on for protesting in the streets.

Wild times. It feels like the timing was really good, too. Trump looks like a fucking dipshit and only the evil, the braindead and the compromised are on board at this point. I'm sure he's salivating at the prospect of using the Insurrection Act, but I wonder if that would backfire spectacularly on it's face. Before he tanked the stock market, it felt like that was going to a solid done deal, now I'm not so sure.
