I can't put my finger on it or articulate this well but there's something very zeitgeisty about this -- zero sum stuff. Surviving while your neighbors perish. Make sure you have plenty even if it means somebody else gets none. Now THAT'S winning!
Do you really think that is what they were enjoying rather than just anticipating the adventure of a storm? I mean I know there's a bunch of selfish fucks out there but there is also excitement before a big storm.
Oh yeah, there’s definitely a buzz in the air before and after impending disaster. There’s no question that grocery store employees aren’t essentially frontline workers in those cases.

I remember lining up at an HEB after a hurricane and the employee waiting for the word to unlock the front to the queuing public was blabbering and half jokingly begging those in front not to stampede or hold him responsible if it didn’t open. Tensions were high until you were on your way out, provided you had the money and the means and a standing roof waiting at home.

Grocery store chains almost function like disaster agencies in declared emergency areas. It’s kind of insane to see and in a sane country would be better handled by public institutions.

An Israeli news channel is making reports about the Biden admin’s complicity with the destruction of Palestine:

The Biden administration allowed Israel unprecedented leeway to carry out its military offensive, despite the enormous death and devastation it inflicted on Gaza. Former Israeli ambassador, Michael Herzog, made a startling admission about Biden’s support: “God did the State of Israel a favour that Biden was the president during this period. We fought [in Gaza] for over a year and the administration never came to us and said, ‘ceasefire now.’ It never did. And that’s not to be taken for granted.” His remarks encapsulated a broader sentiment that the White House gave Benjamin Netanyahu all the political space he needed to execute the military offensive, which has claimed the lives of more than 52,000 Palestinians, mainly women and children.

I don’t think anyone here really believes the “ceasefire” has improved the lives for any Palestinians, but I do think it’s been pretty clear this whole time that the Biden administration was doing nothing but actively aiding and abetting a genocide that was left for Trump to inherit.

It may seem like a subtle difference, but it's there, and is instructive regarding Biden.

Biden has a romantic notion of Israel that is of another time entirely, a time when middle-class white America was literally more informed by Leon Uris than anything else. It reminds me a lot of my dad honestly, who was like a half-year younger. I'm pushing 50 and my first encounter with the whole thing was Exodus (the novel, not the film) too as a teen, recommended by my dad (his copy), who admiringly said the guys who founded Israel were "tough bastards".

This entire speech linked below is very sincere, pretty much wearing the whole thing on his sleeve here, not just playing politics:

https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/th ... nce-day-ce

He is just about the worst mainstream Dem president imaginable for this issue and this moment, uniquely unsuited.
Uniquely unsuited, worst guy for the moment, not a surprise.

Yeah, like refusing to give them money until they stopped killing civillians. It was disgusting and shows how much AIPAC has corrupted our politics. Biden was such an ineffectual president with the bully pulpit. All those dumb articles how he was the second coming of FDR, and yet he never once got out on the bully pulpit for anything, not even to explain his economic agenda, which was the main reason Harris lost. Everyone assumed Biden personally made eggs and gas expensive because of socialism or whatever.

Are we the puppet state of Israel now?

I think it's more like they are our willing proxy. No surprises for me there. The rest of the world going along with this, even today, that's where the real shame and degradation lies.

Looking beyond the tacit approval and inaction of the Biden administration, it's interesting to me how this came out right after Trump's 100th day in office (where fuck all good was accomplished during the 99 preceding days).
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.

"Tacit approval?" Oy vey... I see a 0% chance this being a plant seeing as this is one topic where both parties are completely united. In fact it's more a slap in the face to Trump that they're still wasting their breath praising Biden. This was the vibe in Israel in 2023....so not really sure why this is getting press now.
