Thanks for this. I only had a passing familiarity with them back in the day, and I see they are worth revisiting. Cheers.
Wow, they sound formidable live. I've heard that Roots record, and really wanted to like it, but it sounded way too produced and Nu-Metally to me, what with the tribal chanting and digeridoo shit. This no-nonsense performance fixes that. Bros substantial ink was pretty forward-looking for 1996.

Roots is also too long.

Chaos AD is my favourite. It still has touches of traditional Brazilian rhythms, just enough to stand out as different.

And it’s a Berimbau, not a digeridoo ;-)

No, it's a totally different approach; these bands (generally) started playing thrash as adolescents, learnt how to play, then applied those techniques to mid-tempo riffs later in their careers.

Funk metal / funk influences were a different bag; Suicidal were primarily a hardcore band on their debut, then a thrash band: def some funk metal in the mix later on, but not really what we're talking about here.

I think ST and Infectious Grooves are getting mixed up here. They’re basically the same band.

Trujillo is a monster on this album. It’s all completely ridiculous, but a lot of fun. Definitely a guilty pleasure this album.

Definitely that going on with FNM. With them it was almost organic due to the different member’s interests.

Mother’s Milk’s “metal” edge was definitely the result of the producer. Michael Beinhorn and Fruscanite evidently bickered a lot about the overall production and guitar sound. MM is actually a pretty good RHCP album. Other than Tony’s lyrics, but that’s baked in.
