Won't know unless you measure the rail voltages and see if they're within spec of what the original transformer would have produced.

The speaker is going to have the biggest impact on sound, and what you've got in there now is probably a cheap stereo speaker, which is why it sounds shrill. Definitely get a guitar speaker in there.

To elaborate on what Nate said, this is a solid state amp and the transformer is a power transformer to convert wall voltage to what the amp wants to see. It is not an impedance (ohms) matching transformer like a tube amp would have.

Gotcha. I only know a little about amps, but I've read next to nothing about solid state amps. This thing looks like it has a pretty simple circuit, but I'll have to brush up on this stuff.

Here's one schematic I found with a quick search. Will search more to see if there are discrepancies. Then I'll need to get out to the shed this weekend, pull the chassis, and study it.

Yeah, this thing is obviously a turd. Was planning to get something more appropriate but I want to make sure I get something that will match what the amp wants to see.

Hmm. Gonna have to find the best spot to do that on this one. First I need to figure out what the original specs were. I'm not even sure what ohms the original speaker was. Is that obvious from the schematic? I kinda feel like a moron.
