O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,
How can we know the dancer from the dance?

I've always been charmed by the last two lines of Yeats's poem, Among School Children. Free expression in body movement to music is never crap.

Fun times I've had while dancing:

- winning a cassette of Actually by the Pet Shop Boys in a dance contest at Photon laser tag in high school

- dancing with Tree during our live band karaoke to "Good to Your Earhole" at the first PRFBBQ

- falling through a glass table while dancing to "Tanz Debil"

- contorting at every single Cows show

- dancing onstage with Alexa to "Blood Comes" at a Mouse on Mars hoedown

- jumping around whenever I hear "Radio Free Europe" or the sickening coda to "Wake Up Dead"

- Derrick Carter at Foxy's in '94

I'm not the greatest dancer or nothin but house music makes me feel like I am.

I'm gonna spend the rest of the day quietly smiling, picturing you (or anyone) busting moves to the end of Wake Up Dead.

As a drummer I feel like I should be good at dancing, but I'm terrible and I think it's because my feet want to move in 8th or 16th notes, and that would look completely ridiculous. Also I too am an uptight self-conscious white dude, which doesn't help, so I just generally enjoy watching others dance.

Quick dancing story: a billion years ago my band got a sweet-paying gig at an MIT frat. We set up our stuff and are outside on the fire escape smoking when the kid in charge comes out to chat and tells us it's a dry frat, no booze. We think "well this isn't gonna much of party is it?"

Go back inside, count off the first tune, a groover in 7/4, and instantly the room is filled with attractive college gals all GETTING DOWN. Just letting it rip. Bass player spins around and looks at me with eyes wide, all WTF?!??! The ladies kept dancing all night, it was awesome.

Remembered another dancing story:

NYE circa 2003, we're having a party at the loft where I lived. My roommate is DJing. He put on a Fela record and just let it ride, which was perfectly excellent. At some point my other roommate's annoying girlfriend went over to him and the following ensued:

"Do you think you could put on something better for dancing?"

*thoughtful pause*

"NO."
