Well, my favorite guitarist is Charlie Christian and my favorite sax player is Lester Young, so swing music gets the nod from me.

I'm like Private Miller in the opening scene from Pineapple Express. TSStikka TSStikka TSStikka is my foundational beat.

Here's CC going off amidst major drunken revelry at Minton's in the spring of 1941.

I'm not going to defend "big band music" but I'll absolutely stump for Ellington & Count Basie's first band & a few other bandleaders & soloists. Here's a great Lester Young solo:

Chu Berry (tenor sax solo @ 1:30) made such an impact on Charlie Parker that he named his son Chu:

And Fletcher Henderson was Sun Ra's first employer. Here's Ra near the end of his life covering Henderson:

I've felt out of step with what music people were into since Bush's first album sold millions of copies. So I'm never surprised to find out people don't like John Coltrane, let alone Fletcher Henderson. And I definitely don't listen to the "Pre-Bird" (as Mingus put it) bands and composers anywhere near as much as everything else that happened in the 85 years since then. But there's some great stuff all the way back.

This shit is crazy. 1959!

This ^ is what I was talking about with Pacific Jazz/World Pacific Records, the former of which released that record (Chico Hamilton Quintet featuring Buddy Collette, who compose "Blue Sands"). Whichever this era is, this is the era I'd pick. I'd be happy just to listen to that catalog and no other jazz records.
This does NOT suck.

The one thing I'll say about jazz - though it is not my favorite genre - is that almost all live jazz performances, regardless of style, are at least watchable/listenable. The local high school has a few jazz quartets that play out and they are all great. People who play this stuff are universally more talented at their instrument than me.

Wtf happened to my response which was LOOONG? Not the first time either; starting to get sick of this forum (NOT yalls fault) though I guess it's more my fault... cellphones suck. Anyway, free since Cecil Taylor is my favorite musician but it's really the more adventourous mid 60s post-bop on Blue Note, 65-68 Miles etc.

I don't know if this is helpful to your situation, but:

I've messed up more than once when someone else posted something while working on a post. When this happens, the forum asks you to review the thing that was just posted and confirm again to submit your post. In this case, you have to click 'submit' twice, and if you're in a hurry, you can miss it, especially when on a phone.

that was very helpful and thanks. I suspect this is what has happened the last couple of times though I'm not sure. It has happened a lot in the past year, I don't remember having that issue before but maybe I was just lucky
