In 2023, city and state officials launched a public information campaign, dubbed “Subway Surfing Kills − Ride Inside, Stay Alive,” to deter the dangerous behavior among some youth. New York City has also sued five social media companies, citing harm to youth mental health and subway surfing as an example. NYPD has also deployed drones to monitor subway lines.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority has worked with social media companies, including TikTok and Instagram, to remove videos of people riding outside of trains. Through June of 2025, over 1,800 videos had been taken down

There really doe become a point where it gets into Darwin Awards territory.

There are plenty of folks doing incredibly dangerous work that is a benefit to society. These clowns just want interwebs clout.

Does it say something about our society that people do this stupid shit, sure. But there is a point where individual responsibility is applicable.

While I agree it's Darwin Award territory, IMO, the larger story is how celebrity driven this all is, meaning they all want to be celebrities. Without that, they would not be doing these idiotic things. Clearly these folks see themselves as being without any talent, so the stupider action gets the clicks.

Do people in Europe, Japan, China do this?

Less about social media clout and more youthful stupidity.

There are a few deaths per year in the UK news of someone falling off something etc. while filming. So it’s not just an American phenomenon.

"The drive for clicks is strong with this one" ought to be a meme. Maybe baby Yoda?

It's not surprising to hear that this "balconing" became a "thing" on Ibiza. Makes perfect sense. Apparently the Brits rank number one. Congratulations!

Oh shit it happened a couple months ago, this guy was 26.
