I see Silverface bassman on the reg in Portland and Seattle for well under a grand. I know Blackface Bassmans are stupid but silverfaced seem gettable here still.

I don't really have that opportunity to purchase from people on Craigslist. Only can rely on Reverb or Ebay...

Ok, so, I understand phase is frequency dependent, but - mixing di and and a mic’d bass amp - how the hell did I get myself into a position where, when viewed thru a scope, an A note is perfectly in phase and an E is out?

I flipped the phase on the di and listened and sure enough, there is some deep low end there on some notes. Not a lot, but its there.

I usually move mics and then use a little labs phase unit to get it where it looks and sounds good, but I’m wondering if there’s a phase correction plug that can fix this?

This is more tightening up than anything, but we know how fiddly this part can get.

Digitally, in software you can absolutely see the phase difference between tracks. It's easier if you pump a snare hit through the bass rig to eyeball it. A muffled string clack also works. The DI will always be ahead of the mic. In other words the delay will be the same across the track, but the additive/subtractive effects of the phase difference will vary by note.

Don't be afraid to let an entire element go. The AB is always biased because the single source will always be louder than the multi version. You can always sum the parts, or make two different mixes and volume match a "just the one mic (or DI)" version to compare to the multiple mic/DI version without there being a louder one.

Weird issue, but Melda Auto Align and Freeform Phase are the best tools for phase fixes I've found. I don't really use them much though. In reaper I will put 2 tracks (or more) in a folder and you can see the outline of each wave in the folder on top of each other on the Folder track in the time line, then I can just nudge the late one until the timing is pretty much lined up and I call it a day. If not in reaper, I'm not sure how to fix timing issues this fast. Probably the plugins.

Analog EQs are essentially controlled frequency-dependent phase shifters. Sounds like you have something in the signal path that doesn't have 0 phase across the entire audio frequency spectrum. This is to be expected if you have series capacitors in the audio path, which 99% of audio gear does.

When I was designing Mark Levinson stuff for a bit, the design philosophy was to not allow series capacitors in the audio path, thus avoiding the phase shift issue. Of course, you have to get really creative with the design to work around DC offsets, because you can't just AC couple the audio to the next gain stage with a simple capacitor.
