Australian underground music thread

1
A while back I on the Oz-Rock thread, I promised to make a thread about lesser-known Australian bands. This is that thread.

Budd, from Brisbane. For a while there in the early 90s, their album Yakfat was known as the last great Australian independent release. This was largely a function of Australia's leading indie radio station, JJJ (Triple J) going national, Nirvana breaking, and grifters emerging from everywhere. The popularisation of underground music led to some truly terrible music (Silverchair and worse), all of which I shall avoid here. 1993:

Massappeal, from Sydney. Massappeal were one part of the Holy Trinity (along with Hard Ons and Hellmenn) of bands on Waterfront Records, a label and record store. It is hard to explain just how important Waterfront was at the time. There could be another thread on Waterfront alone! This is Rat in a Hole, from 1986:

The Hellmenn, from Sydney. Ben Brown from The Hellmenn is a lovely guy and a very successful artist and illustrator. A version of this band, with Ben, plays still as The Herbal Lunatics. This track, Manly, is a rise on Straight Edge culture (Fuck that straight edge shit, let's get wasted" was on the album sleeve art), (1987):

Hard Ons, from Sydney. Still going. Australia's Prime Minister (recently photographed rocking a Joy Division t-shirt) is a big fan. From 1986:

Spunk Bubbles, literally unknown but loads of fun : )

Mortal Sin! 1987. If you don't liek this then you are dead inside:

Feedtime - oh come on, everyone here knows who Feedtime are! 1986:

The Scientists - same here - 1984:

Rowland S. Howard, guitarist of the Birthday Party. Almost certainly everyone here has heard the Birthday Party, but just in case you have missed Rowland himself. From 1999:

Distant Locust, a fantastic band that bridged the gap between dark-wave and the emerging electronica scene in Sydney in the early 80s and 90s. If you have not heard Distant Locust then you will in for a treat!

Null Object, terrifying analogue techno from Sydney. 2000:

Non-Bossy Posse, squatter techno from '93:

Canine, contemporary crust punk. Part of the Blackwire Records scene. Blackwire is now defunct as a space, and Monster Mouse Studios have inherited the movement : )

Hannahband, also part of the Blackwire Records scene. Unbelievable live! Hannahband meant a lot to a lot of people:

Bract, formerly Coward Punch, also part of the Blackwire Records scene:

The Meanies, back to the past. The Meanies were the biggest underground band in Austrlia and they ruled hte live scene 92-94:

Diploid, Now back to the Blackwire Records scene, Diploid live in the USA!

Carb On Carb, more Blackwire Records peeps:

God. Australia's Nirvana. As far as everyone who remembers the Waterfront Record Days is concerned, this is our Smells Like Teen Spirit. Saying "This song sucks" could get you killed. 1987:

Spirit Valley, the best band in Sydney in 2014:

Aftermath - live at The Lewisham Hotel - home of death Metal and Grindcore in the late 80s/early 90s. 1991:

Glen Schenau, probably my favourite Austrlian recording artist right now:

Toecutter, because you should know all about Dave and his music. Like Australia's Ed Banger scene:

Toxic Lipstick. Nightmare Glitchcore at its best:

Great thread, but then as an Australian I’m biased - some lesser knowns that might float boats…

Young and restless - only did one album in the early 2000s - great stuff

civil dissident - essential hardcore from early 80s

Michael Beach

o7VqN5tD

Harmony - links to TFS and Mclusky - good shit

X - aspirations is a masterpiece; this comp of rarities (x-spurts) is also a wild ride

Bluebottle kiss - criminally underrated - a ton of great records - try Doubt Seeds as an entry … homeless blues less live is cathartic as hell…
