-40 is light jacket weather, so maybe my perception of "bundled up like it's -40" is a bit skewed.Krev wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 1:31 pmShit done changed. That used to be light jacket weather.ErickC wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 12:33 pm So far Boston's been hella warm and it's been great. The most I've needed is my suit coat (e.g. when going to interviews), and only in the morning. But people here are bundled up like it's -40.![]()
More back to where weather originally came up... Europeans often act like invading Russia in winter is impossible because of Napoleon and Hitler. Have you actually looked at Russia's climate? With the exception of the Siberian taiga (which is not where any of those forces invaded), it's practically a summer vacation. Send a bunch of Minnesotans and North Dakotans and Manitobans in and we'll be barbecuing in our shorts after the battle is won.
One of my favourite lines in GoldenEye is an exchange between the excellent Robbie Coltrane's Valentin Zhukovski and 007. "My knee... aches... (Shatner pause) whenever it is cold. Do you have any idea how long winter is up here? Tell him, Dmitri!" "Well, it depends..." "Shut up, Dmitri!" I looked up St. Petersburg's climate. There is not a single place in Minnesota that is warmer in winter. They're not even in the same climate zone.
Pff it was like 20-something. Same clothing required as 70.twelvepoint wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 1:22 pmWithin a day it can change + or - 30 degrees though, like this morning. No one knows how to dress so they just go worst-case.ErickC wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 12:33 pm So far Boston's been hella warm and it's been great.
