Pilger generally on point and ahead of the curve.

Outside of certain circles, he's seen as more of an advocate than a capable journalist who bothered to get his facts straight.

Some good, groundbreaking reporting, mostly about Cambodia in the '70s, Australian indigenous issues, and Palestine. No doubt.

But he took major heat for completely making up a story about "buying" a pre-pubescent Thai "slave girl" (his words), which turned out to be untrue; she was, in fact, not a "peasant," nor an orphan, nor even from Northern Thailand, as he'd reported. She was a local schoolgirl who thought she was posing for photos and getting a train ticket for free from a nice Western journalist. He either got duped by a local fixer and didn't do his homework at all, or fabricated the story completely, thinking nobody would notice. And he got caught. For a time, university media courses actually used Pilger as an example of how not to report on foreign affairs.

Yep, I'm remembering that correctly, from a journalistic ethics course, after 20 years:
Pilger's obit in the Boston Globe wrote: A story about a young Thai girl forced into slavery until Mr. Pilger rescued her turned out not to be true.
He was also an apologist for the Serbian ethnic cleansing campaigns in Bosnia and Kosovo. And later in life, spouted Sergei Lavrov's press releases on RT, unquestioningly. Tended to get caught w/his pants down quite often by his few fact checkers (re: his Balkans report by the editor of The Guardian during the '90s, if I remember it right). Then again, his main employer/bread and butter was the Daily Mirror, one of Britain's least accurate tabloids.

Kind of the Oliver Stone of lefty journalism?

Honestly, heart going out to all the people on this forum that live in the States. What’s happening is a giant bag of balls.

Very likely it looks like was carrying legally. I’m sure all of the 2a proponents will be swarming the city to make sure their rights shall not be infringed. /eyeroll.

This shit is unbelievable, and while I’m disappointed, not surprised.

Him carrying or not should be absolutely unimportant. They instigated and killed a dude. All 8 of them.

Yes agree 1000%. In the US, proponents of the second amendment have claimed forever that they would come to the defense of their citizens against the tyrannical government.

It’s pretty clear they were lying and are just a bunch of pussies with guns.

For me, the travesty is how absolutely unnecessary all of this is. Instigated by wholly pointless, politically driven ICE raids, of course. Can't emphasize that enough. The whole allocation of resources to ICE is just fucking insane.

That said, bringing a gun to any protest, legal or not, in which you might have a run-in w/law enforcement seems like asking for trouble.

Then again, I'm 100% anti-firearms, even if the cops have them. The current administration is getting a huge boner at the thought of anyone sticking up for immigrants or migrants getting killed by immune federal agents. And the odds of even the staunchest cowboy or ex-military protestor emerging victorious against irate professional "law" enforcement are... pretty much nil. Would not advise, unless you're itching to become a martyr. That gun likely will do you way more harm than good.

I get the psychology behind leftists starting to oppose gun control, I really do. But it's ultimately dumb and counterproductive. All those overzealous people, for example, who thought Mangione would change the healthcare scene (and there were plenty of them) and teach the world a lesson have been proven quite wrong more than one year on: Healthcare premiums are way higher now, coverage is worse, CEOs had some extra security for a month or two (which they could well afford and have since sent packing), and college girls have a new rich-kid heartthrob to lust after. Yay, that's showin' em.

Coincidentally, my wife was telling me we would apply for a gun license last night. She wants to get trained for conceal carry.

Mark this as the demarcation point for the next civil war. The escalation has started. It feels like it's a matter of time before people start firing back.
