What the hell are you talking about?

Cordially,
Bob Weston

I double checked, in case it was my imagination or I was thinking of another record entirely. In the last thirty seconds or so of "Mouthpiece," just before the song breaks down and the drum solo begins, I can hear Steve say discernibly, "Put on your little suit. Put on Winkie's [?] little suit." Someone (presumably yourself) is yelling off in the distance while this happens. I realize this is probably not considered a lyric, but a buried detail nonetheless.

So who the hell is Winki?

Amicably,

I'm jealous of you guys. Nonetheless, I still enjoy my music on vinyl with a Sony PSX4 with Ortofon f/ff. Cheap, but damn good.

Doesn't compare at all to my deceased grandfather's original Transcriptors with SME 3 and Shure (type 4?) with Quad 400 pre. Unfortunately, I can't use that- it's gathering dust. I cannot upset those to whom it may be willed.

I also enjoy listening to music my Rotel RCD965 BX very much, even thought it's a CD player.

I bought a Rega P3 with a ClearAudio Aurum Alpha cartridge last weekend.

If it had a dick, I would get on my knees and suck it.

I had no idea music could sound like this. I've been listening to records on a $75 Teac for about ten years so I knew it would be an upgrade but jesus christ. I now know for sure why vinyl is better than CDs, I'm not just saying it to fit in with the cool kids.

The other night I was reminded of an early music experience I had. The year was like 1984 or 1985. I was 7 or 8 (depending on which year it actually was). The Sony Walkman was all the rage (in South Dakota anyway--I'm sure we were a year or two behind the rest of the universe). Anyway, my parents ordered me a Walkman from the Sears catalog for my birthday or something. I can still remember it coming in the mail. I was pretty fucking excited to get to listen to "headphones" on the go. Up to that point I had listened to a lot of Kiss records on the phonograph through some crappy mono headphones that were too big for my head. So, I crack the thing open, pop in the AA Duracells and cue up Michael Jackson's Thriller. I remember the music totally freaking me out. Where is that coming from? What the fuck? The drums are over by the stove (I was in the kitchen), but wait! The bass is under the fridge! And how the hell is MJ singing up above me? It was kind of like if the apes at the beginning of 2001 had found an Ipod. I started jumping for joy, or maybe out of fear. I was frightened and in a state of bliss all at once. I remember scrambling for the "Stop" button after a few seconds because I was so freaked out. I turned the volume down, hit play again, and slowly came to accept this new way of hearing music.

So anyway. The other night I was spinning records on the new love of my life (sorry Emily) and I put on The Jam's All Mod Cons. I bought it recently and hadn't listened to it yet. The record itself is in average shape, plenty of visible scratches, the kind of record that probably wouldn't have sounded too great on my old table. So it starts playing and I had that same feeling of panic that I had the first time I listened to Thriller on the ol' walkman. Music is not supposed to sound this good. How the hell does that thing know to avoid that static and scratches and only play what I want to hear? It was fucked up. I once again had to stop a minute, catch my breath and settle in to this newfound, blissful way of listening to music.

Thanks for letting me rant. You guys are pretty much the only people I (don't) know who would care about something like this...

Let me join the chorus of approval for the Rega P3 -- I've had one (with the Rega Super Bias cartirige) for about eight months, and I've been loving it like a schoolboy loves his pie. Simple, sturdy, sounds great, look classy, makes everything from Fairport Convention to Universal Indians sound ace. Go get one, why don't you?
