Does it bother you that you are basically a clone of Steve? A carbon copy of his equipment, and his music? Wouldn't you rather figure out who you are, and try and be you, rather than try and be a xerox copy of him?

why is that one someone wants to plug a les paul into a marshal thats o.k even though its been done to death but when someone has an interest in getting a similar sound to steve theyre instantly dubbed a shellac-a-like or steve clone. as for finding out who i am. ive done this ( as well as anyone can). i dont choose to aim for a similar sound to steve because of who he is but because bottom line is that i really dig the sound he gets and this sound happens to suit me.
anyway im off to buy a cool hat now!!!!

Think of it like this...

It's like, if you bought a shirt that said "Chicago Bears" on it, that would be pretty alright, cause it's a common and standard thing to do... but if you wore a white t-shirt that said "CHOOSE LIFE" on it, and over that wore a black leather jacket that said "REVENGE" on the back of it, that wouldn't really be super alright.

the way i look at it is like this. Steve was influenced by people. I am influenced by people. GSE is influenced by people. Nothing is ever truly original, it's very hard to shed influences. I myself dont have any problem with people going after tones of said influences at all (it's how you can stumble onto your own sound during the process) but i don't agree with humping another mans music in a way that just takes there style away withought anything of yourself added too it. shit how many fuckin ac/dc , clapton, vai, malmsteen, buckethead, santana generic ass tones can someone take. not many. so fly your freak flag and do whatever suits you.

im high on wine.. wooooha

There are always a very few really inovative and creative people who come up with the origional ideas.

Then there are a lot of people who take those ideas, call them their own because they are simply not very origional or creative. When stuck between a rock and a hard place they call it a "homage". You see it a lot in music and art.

Perhaps, GSE will do something origional like starting a band called "Varnish", Dropping his first initial and calling himself "Sephan Ebini".

With ideas the concept is usally more powerful than the technical aspect of it's implementation. Have you thought. Why does Steve Albini set his gear up the way he does? What is he trying to do? As oppsed to I've got to get a Harmonic Pukeulator and a bi amp rig.

Thats harsh. Their musics sound more like Gov't Issue or Jawbox to me than Shellac. He (Gary) is in a band right? When is your band playing out next? I'd go to see you just so I can say that you are a clone of whatever influence that I can hear in your music. I wont do that really, but I hope you get the point. He likes the sound of his equipment, thats all. I bought a specific amp that someone had because I liked the way it sounded. Does that mean that Im a Tim Cook clone? I have the same amp, same speaker config, same type of bass.... thats right, he plays metal, and I don't. Lighten up, Scott.

Love,
Dan.

I wish you would do that. As far as I know, as of right now, I'll be playing a show in April and another in May. I'll let you know about at least one of them.

If you're familiar with a guitarist who plays a Lado Falcon into two YBA-1A's, by way of a Super Duper and a Black Dog, and I've done everything I can to directly steal his signature tone, and my music sounds suspiciously like it could be the new album by his band, then yeah, tell me I'm a clone of that guy.

Obviously I don't get you point, do I?

what it boils down to is this. i like the guitar sound. i like the way that its driven but still has alot of clarity an definition which i guess is one of the major points of having this type of setup. ive been playing in bands since i was 16 (now 32) and have always writen original music and have tried many different amps and guitars to get a sound i liked and have never been totaly happy with them. this setup i am totaly happy with which may change in the future. i am not paying homage to anyone, i dont believe in idolising anyone. its simply the guitar sound i am after.
