Joel Phelps has some great ones. "Hope's Hit" from the truly fine 3 may work. (I'd never heard him before, but catching this on college radio blew my mind. When the DJ didn't backannounce it, I called to find out what he'd played. Thus began my JRLP/SKWM fixation.)
Also, Joel's cover of TVZ's "Flying Shoes" is a stunner, and might fit your mix. It's on the bonus disc for Customs.

"Sad Song" from Lou Reed's Berlin album. Actually, anything from the Berlin album.
Also, "Wouldn't You Miss Me" by Syd Barrett.

Yeah! Also "From Up Here" which I think is also on Customs.
Catpower also does a great cover of Smog's "Bathysphere."
TV on The Radio - "Blind"
June of 44 - "Sink is Busted"
Minutemen - "Beacon Sighted Through Fog" & "The Anchor"

Shannon by Henry Gross. Coincidentally, He and Carl Wilson both had Irish Setters named Shannon. Carl related the story of how his dog died when it was hit by a car. Later, Henry put on an "environments" lp of ocean sounds and sat on the bed w/ his dog Shannon and wrote a song about how it would feel if his own dog died. Instant tear jerker.
